Mater Cleri Teacher Herman Schlund Dies

Herman Theodore Schlund, 72, who has worked as a teacher and custodian for Mater Cleri Seminary in Colbert, wash., eight years, died Friday at home, E. 14710 Wellesley.

Schlund began a religious career at age 17 when he entered the Marianists, a Catholic religious order.  He served with them until he was 37, working in China as a teacher and in building an administration of schools.

When World War II broke out, he was imprisoned in a Chinese concentration camp and was later returned to the United States.

He then left the ministry and married, working at various jobs until he joined Mater Cleri Seminary.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Barbara Labertew, Spokane; a son, Ted Labertew, of the Spokane Valley; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Carroll Robinson, the Spokane Valley; a stepson, Kenneth Handke, Cleveland, Ohio; six grand-children; a brother, Pete Schlund, Cleveland.

A rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Mater Cleri in Colbert.  Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday there, with the Rev. William Skylstad officiating.
